The Kappa Lambda (KΛ) Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was established on June 9, 1923, in Greensboro, North Carolina. According to the author, Brother Charles H. Wesley, (The History of Alpha Phi Alpha: A Development in College Life) the establishment of the chapter was facilitated by Brother Stansback of Wilson, NC.
The charter members were Brothers F. L. Merry, President; F. D. Bluford, Vice-President; J. B. Matthews, Secretary; D. K. Cherry, Chaplain; and Brothers C. W. Davis, R. O. Lanier, and H. D. Giles. KΛ is the 10th alumni chapter established by the Fraternity. Currently, there are 414 college chapters and 369 alumni chapters established by the Fraternity. These chapters are located both domestically and internationally, including locations in the Americas, Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia. Although the fraternity initially began at the collegiate level, during the fifth annual convention and the first alumni reunion, held in 1912, the fraternity established its first alumni chapter, Alpha Lambda.
Kappa Lambda (KΛ) was the first alumni chapter established in the state of North Carolina. Currently, there are 16 alumni chapters and 26 college chapters in North Carolina. KΛ supports and advises four local college chapters; Beta Epsilon (North Carolina A&T State University), Phi Pi (High Point University- which was chartered through KL in 2022) Pi Zeta (University of North Carolina at Greensboro), and Sigma Delta (Elon University)
Alpha Phi Alpha's Mission is to develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.
